"Lucky Me, I Live In Lubbock"

When I was growing up here in Lubbock, the city decided they needed a motto. Several things were offered, including references to seeing Lubbock in the rear-view mirror, but "Lucky Me...." was chosen. I remember a news story a few months later which caused a great deal of humor in the papers in Lubbock's rival city, Amarillo. It seems some poor demented soul decided that Satan was alive and well in Lubbock. It was even mentioned somehow in the state legislature. This prompted a headline in the Amarillo paper: Lucky Satan, He Lives In Lubbock!

So...what is all this leading up to: We had a day yesterday that started with a low temperature of 28 degrees and ended at 5:00 or so with a high of 80 degrees. Thought those of you shoveling snow might like to reconsider where you are planted.

What Did You Get For Christmas....Tag

Alright..so we've seen the decorations and have taken them down and put them away for another year, but we haven't reported on our Christmas day and our gifts. Since I am the nosey one in the family and since I really wish that I could have spent the day with all of you, I want to get a little information from you.

1. When did you wake up? about 6:30 when Paul called to tell us that Santa had arrived and that they had explored their stockings and it was time for us to get there so they could open their presents.

2. What did you have for Christmas breakfast? At Reed and Fleur's house we had cinnamon rolls, sausage balls, eggs, bacon. When we got home, we were in time for: grits, eggs, bacon, sausage, english muffins. (small amounts of everything, except eggs...yuck)

3. When did you open your presents?? Christmas morning at both houses, then when Reed's family arrived at the house we opened our shared gifts.

4. Do you have a large meal on Christmas? Noon or evening?? We had our Christmas feast in the evening.

5. What do you have for your Christmas Dinner? We had Mexican food...tamales, enchiladas, etc.

6. What was your favorite gift to give? A new soft blanket to Harvey

7. What was your favorite gift to receive? My MP3 player and my Digital picture frame.

8. What is your favorite Christmas treat? lemon bars

9. What is your favorite Christmas movie? National Lampoon Christmas Vacation. I laugh most of the way through it. Chevy Chase reminds me of Bill.

10. Did you gather around the piano and sing carols? NO

11. What did you do that was special this year? Harvey and I made many of our gifts. It is always fun to give homemade gifts. Harvey made a Morris chair for Vicki and toy boxes/hope chests for the twins. I made shop aprons for Reed and Paul and craft aprons for the twins.

Liza's High School Memory Tag

Now, REALLY!!!! High School was a long, long time ago... back when we used slide rules and went out late at night hoping to see Sputnik slowly making its way across the night sky.

But, here it goes....

1. Did you date someone from school? Yes, several in fact. No one very seriously, but several very, very funny guys.

2. What kind of car did you drive? The kids car was an old Chrysler with a semi-automatic transmission. It was the safety equivalent of sending your kids to school in a Hummer. It was a tank.

3. Were you a party animal? In our time there were no party animals. You were either a good girl or a slut. I did, however, go to a lot of parties. One of the churches rented a storefront and let the youth decorate it and use it anyway they wanted. They called it "The Great Pumpkin" after the then new Charley Brown cartoons. We had a party there every weekend where we danced, played games, etc. It was good innocent fun.

4. Were you considered a flirt? No

5. Were you in band, orchestra, or choir? Yes, choir.

6. What was your most embarrassing moment in high school? Open showers and dressing rooms in gym class. We were required to shower in open showers without shower curtains. I hated it. I am very, very modest. It scarred me for life.

7. Were you a nerd? Absolutely not. I was intellectual, but not a nerd exactly. But, I did compete on a state level in slide rule competitions. I joined the team because there were lots of interesting boys on the team and I wanted to meet and date them.

8. Were you on any varsity teams? No

9. Did you get suspended or expelled? Are you kidding???? Never.

10. Can you still sing the fight song? Not for my school, but I can for Amarillo High....

11. Who were your favorite teachers? Sparky Watts...the physics teacher.

12. What was your school's full name? Monterey High School (Lubbock)

13. School mascot? Plainsmen

14. Did you go to homecoming? With who?? Of course! Freshmen year...Greg See. Jr-Tony Rox. Sr- Bill Penn

15. If you could go back and do it again would you? No....been there, done that!

16. What do you remember most about graduation? The extremely large number of graduates...over 1000 in my class. Baby boomers, you understand. We held graduation in the city auditorium which was crammed full. It took forever!

17. Where did you go senior skip day? It was the dark ages. No such thing.

18. Were you in a club? Pre-med club, Slide rule club (remember, I joined the ones with the most boys.)

19. Have you gained some weight since then? Not a pound

20. Who was your prom date? Jr year... can't remember his name...he had red hair. Sr year- Tony Rox.

21. Are you planning on going to your 10 year reunion? No, no my 40th reunion came and went without me...

22. Looking back, what advice would you give yourself? Can't think of anything. I wouldn't listen anyway.

Thanksgiving in Lubbock

I don't have any pictures to share, but we had a wonderful Thanksgiving here in Lubbock.

We had quite a few for the meal... Chip's family (8 members), Harvey's mother, John and Susan, Harvey and I, the Bacon family (5members), and Reed and Fleur's five gathered in Fleur's family room for a sit down dinner. It was really great, though conversation with those at the other end of the table was difficult. We had plenty of food and enough to send doggie bags with everyone. Harvey was a little disappointed that he only had one day of leftovers, but the rest of us counted that as one of our blessings this year.

Paul came home with me after the meal and we played games and watched movies until he had to go home to get ready for a Friday trip to Amarillo to see his other grandparents. I like to spend time alone with Paul. He is so very funny.

John and I had other opportunities to visit...he and Susan went home to Austin yesterday. We watched a couple of his videos and grumbled about the times in which we live. I guess that makes us officially old farts (at least ONE of us...you can fill in any name you please).
