Rain, Rain Go Away

For the first time in the history of the Lubbock School System, schools are canceled tomorrow because of RAIN! We are having a "100 year flood" here. As of 10:00 tonight we have gotten 7.54" of rain in the last 24 hours and are expecting it to rain all night. Tropical storm Lyle is working its way up here from Mexico.

Lubbock city employees are working through the night sandbagging houses that are flooding. We seem to be fine. I can't help but think of Mom's house on Clearwell and wondering what it would be like in this weather. I, personally, have never seen this much rainfall in a single day. It is really exciting.

As we listen to the rain dripping off of the roof, our thoughts are with our Houston family. I talked to our cousin Hinda this afternoon and she and Mary Alice and families are planning to "hunker down" and ride out the storm. They are getting in extra propane and filling their cars with gas, but are veterans at riding out hurricanes and are not worried. Chip's sister, Donna lives in Corpus Christi and had her house boarded up when it looked like the storm would hit there. She was planning to go to San Antonio, and will probably still go even though the storm is expected to hit Galveston.

I am also reminded of our Grandmother Reed in weather like this. She told me of a reoccurring dream that she had about rain... how it started sprinkling then it rained more and more. It would fill up the streets and would overflow the roads around the farm. Everytime she had that dream someone close to her died. She had the dream before our father died. (this is a creepy story, isn't it?). It is very interesting that the day she died in Amarillo it rained like that.

So, keep our Houston folks in your prayers and think of us as we weather out our own little flood here in Lubbock.
